Informing authors & readers about Release URLs of Pubs

Goal of this design walkthrough is to inform the author(s) and reader(s) about release URLs associated with a Pub.

Journey Mapping:

  • Author finishes writing pub content in draft and is ready to release. Clicks on Publish. Modal shown below pops up for creating a Release.

  • Author adds a release note and then clicks Create Release. A publish success modal is shown as illustrated below.

  • This is a visual confirmation that the Release has been created, but no other information is provided such as at which URL does the release live. Clicking on Close takes the author back to the draft view which is the same url as the current page author is on. Clicking on Go to Release takes the author to a new url - the Release URL, and hence, away from the current draft page. Release URL opens in the same tab itself.

• In the newly created Release view, no Sharing options shown in the PubHeader even though author is logged in. Social option is shown instead. So author cannot get Sharing URL of the newly created release, other than from the browser URL itself.

  • On the contrary, in the Draft view (accessible by clicking on Go to Draft), there is an option for Sharing, which shows the following modal:

  • User can go back to the Release view, by clicking the View Latest Release button in the PubHeader.

  • After adding some more content to the pub, author now is ready for another release of the pub. To do that, author can click on Publish (create a release) button.

  • Clicking that Publish button pops up a modal as shown below:

  • URL attached to The most recent release is that of the release (#1) created earlier - https://designspace.pubpub.org/pub/gqyjrxww/release/1.

  • Clicking on Create Release results in Published Successfully modal as shown before, with option to Close the modal (and go back to the draft view itself), or Go to Release, which takes the author to the page pointing to the URL for the latest release (#2).

Design Recommendations

At the point of informing the author that a new Release has been successfully created:

If release is the first release, provide a positive affirmation to the author about the achievement of said Release. Also, inform the author about the direct URL they can use to access this latest release, and any future _latest_ releases. Copy for that confirmation message should include the following parts:

“Congratulations! You have published the first Release of this pub that is publicly viewable.”

This release is accessible at the following URL: http://blabla.pubpub.org/pub/pubslug

The pubslug can be customized in Pub Settings. We do not recommend changing it once you have already shared the pub url with others.

To make any changes to the contents of this pub, you can always access the draft version of this pub by adding /draft at the end of the pub url given above.

Once the changes are made, you can release the latest version of the pub again. The most up-to-date Release of the pub will always be available at the URL given above. If you would like to access previous Releases of the pub, you can do so by affixing /release/#, where # corresponds to the release number of the pub.
